This year’s Miniatures 2017: War & Peace, held in the Conservatory Concert Hall at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM), met a full RSVP of almost 500 people. Audiences were delighted by the various classical and contemporary pieces played by talented musicians across our very own orchestra as well as students from YSTCM.
The concert displayed notable differences from last year’s Miniatures, which include larger collaboration with YSTCM students and staff, and the opt for larger group pieces, namely Holst’s Mars, the Bringer of War, Mendelssohn’s Overture for Winds, Vivaldi’s Double Cello Concerto, and Wang Chenwei’s beautifully arranged Chrysanthemum Terrace. The preparation for the concerts and the large group pieces was not easy, given the short time in-between, and given that rehearsals had to be done during the vacation break. Nevertheless, Friday (2o Jan) saw success in the numerous practices and preparations for the chamber music concert as audiences clapped and displayed awe for the pieces being played. Chrysanthemum Terrace especially appeared to be a crowd favourite, judging from the audiences’ positive response to the piece.
We would like to express our gratitude to EMCC, who sponsored our concert and aided us in administrative and logistics issues throughout the concert; Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, who provided us with administrative support, and more importantly, talented musicians that we are able to play with, the piece conductors that had worked with us for the past 1-2 months, Mr. Francis Tan, Mr. Foo, and Mr. Aaron Yong, and our Music Director and Resident Conductor Mr. Lim for giving us musical direction and advice on our pieces throughout the whole preparation process. Lastly, we would like to thank everyone who had come to support us. The concert certainly would not have been a success without the presence of each and everyone of you. With that, we look forward to seeing you in our next concert!
